How do you feel about the royal blue dress shirt?

I don't really see how a color, in and of itself, can be outdated. A bell-bottomed polyester leisure suit in that color? Outdated. But a color is...just a color.

i just remember seeing royal blue everywhere in the 90’s and it’s a bit harder to find now.

For a more in depth thought - I think the application is really the issue.

If you got this color in a textured linen shirt, as an example, I think it would be more useful. Still not for everyone, but not as garish as with a suit.

I think the comments about it looking dated have some truth. When I see shirt I think of like.... David Schwimmer in Friends with a bad, light block striped tie and a solid black suit.

Picking up on what someone else said, I think it might rock with a white or cream suit/sportcoat, no tie and preferably an outdoor cafe near the ocean.

In more formal business attire with a tie, I agree with your clothier.

Fair point, but colours do go in and out of style, just look at cars from the 60s/70s/80s, there are definitely trends

70s was all autumn shades of orange and brown, cars/clothes/decor
