Help, understanding the functionality of my linen pants!

I have a pair of khaki linen/cotton pants manufactured by Banana Republic. This pair is probably 8-10 years old and I enjoy them very much. Wear them several times a month. Something I have never been able to figure out is some of the added "features" built into these pants.

I am hoping the expert readers of styleforum might help solve some of these mysteries for me. I am always curious about functionality of clothing and expect some sort of usability or logic to all aspects and features of clothing, or maybe some derivation of style or functionality.

First question: Why do the pants have an internal drawstring if they already have a standard zipper and button function?

Second question: What is the functionality of the two loops of cloth sewn into both hips of the interior of the pants?

Third questions: Why does the right pocket have a second smaller pocket behind the larger standard normal front pocket? This smaller pocket only exists on the right side of the pants.

The smaller pocket is too small for my hand to enter it in its entirety. And the larger standard front pocket already has the standard interior small coin pocket sewn into it. This would lead me to believe that the second pocket is not intended for coins. Help???

Pics below. Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide!

For fine adjustments (in case you don't want to wear a belt. This is a pretty standard feature of outdoor and performance clothing.

I've heard these called "grab loops". Apparently, they help you pull your pants on faster. Go figure. I've also heard them called "hang loops", which makes more sense to me. good for drying.

This is a standard security pocket for keys, emergency cash, etc....
