Quick question on comparison between the saddle tan Badalassi leather and the natural CXL. I am considering a diesel boot and while I am familiar with the GS CXL and how it ages (have a CXL Ottawa), I have no experience with the Badalassi leather. Which one ages better and stretches more? Does CXL crease more than the saddle tan leather ?

my saddle tan veg that are roughly 3 years old. They have gotten a lot of wear and are about ready for a resole. I have natural CXL diesels that are also about 3 years old.

Thanks. Picked up a pair of these in the b grades sale , should be getting them next week. Time to check out the famed GS b grades for the first time!

Received a brand new pair of Grant Stone Ottawa in crimson CXL yesterday. These are firsts (not factory seconds). I'm quite surprised and disappointed by the quality that I am seeing here, a ton of scuffs and scratches, glue issues, welt issues, dents on the heel and uneven stitching (upper and welt).i had heard really good things about GS quality and workmanship, but I'm in a bit of shock as to how these were ever sold as a factory first. This feels like buying a pair of Allen Edmonds and their miserable quality control.

i love the boot itself, but very disappointed in the particular pair i got. They don't have my size in stock in pretty much anything in their website inventory so i guess I'm stuck with these. :(

Don't know how this shipped. I'd reach out, shouldn't be like that. Curious why we are seeing more of these pop up on this thread

Is that a hole in the shoe in the rear where the pieces weren't sewn together correctly in the 3rd pic? That's shocking. If it's just an optical illusion and it's glue, then it would change my opinion of the boots. All of the 5 pairs I have purchased look almost perfect.

not a hole, just excess glue. I think they are low on inventory and shipping out seconds as first. Recently a lot of folks are complaining about GS on forums.
I love the shoe otherwise, but this makes me doubt what GS is doing.

I noticed in this thread, around August or September of 2021, someone talking with Wyatt about a problem with their order 16xxx. My first order in October of this year was 29xxx. If GS started with order no. 1 in 2016 and kept numbering sequentially it looks like they've had a huge increase in sales over the past year or so. That could be a blessing and a curse.

The CXL mars easily. I see a nice pair of boots there, I just think they didn't clean them up like they do most new pairs after they come from the factory. If you sent those back they could do it and send them back to you and you'd never even know it was the same pair. Just my humble opinion.

Your point about CXL marring and scuffing is fair and honestly that's not my biggest concern.
What bothers me more is the welt stitching and the chewed up welt fudging in an area where to my eye it seems like they repaired the stitches.

The dents on the heel cap, excess glue point to something that shouldn't be called a 'first'.
If you are ok with accepting that that or having them clean and send it back, is your opinion and I respect that, but in my opinion I don't think a customer should have to experience that.

Don't get me wrong, the presentation is definitely lacking, and it shouldn't be up to you to have to clean them up. But I was just opining that all of those "flaws," with the exception of the double stitching on the bottom of the sole, can be made to disappear. They are purely cosmetic, and they would not bother me as the moment my shoes go on my feet they start getting banged up. I don't honestly know what makes a boot a "second" because I have only purchased first quality.

Most of the boot looks great. The second and third photos are the only ones that would mildly concern me and make them seconds quality. I have seen (less obvious) examples of both from Grant Stone and neither are a big deal. But if you want perfect boots, by all means return them.

Chromexcel leather is notoriously easy to scratch and dent. These are not defects, but features. Granted, they usually put out much better quality-controlled footwear. Reach out to them if you want to complain. Or don't, and send them back. You'll find worst defects on more expensive footwear. But, for Grant Stone standards, these look like B-grades.

Also, no one is entitled to receive a perfect pair of boots, regardless if they paid $200 or $2000 for a pair. The buyer does have the right to complain and or return them, however.

I suspect that if you look at them from 6 feet away, all of these minor issues will fade into nothingness.
