but i also see people who drink caffeine and smoke cigarettes every day (both terrible for your skin), who then spend hundreds of dollars on expensive skin care to "minimize wrinkles." it is foolish.

I agree that it's preferable to live the right way for better skin rather than rely on chemicals and surgery to repair the damage later, but some people like coffee and tobacco and have money to burn. It doesn't mean the entire skin care industry is a waste of money.

Cetaphil has two cleansers that are worth noting. First is their classic facial cleanser which is basically a watery lotion. It can be used dry or with water, and I personally do not enjoy the feeling that it leaves on my skin. Second, is Cetaphil's daily cleanser, or whatever it's called. It comes in a pump bottle and it's more like a soap, it's clear as opposed to opaque like the other cleanser. I've used this second one on and off as a great daily cleanser for years in combination with a light toner with a bit of salicylic acid to keep off acne. When my skin gets a bit dry, I just use a light moisturizer like murad's light facial moisturizer.

Lately, I've been using Oil of Olay gentle facial cleanser for sensitive skin with aloe. I believe its primarily a makeup remover, but I'm not sure. This stuff is amazing, comes in a plastic tube and it doesn't dry my face out at all. They also have a variant with witchhazel which would probably dry you out if you have sensitive/dry/normal skin, but I haven't tried it so I couldn't tell you from experience. You could get it at any drugstore/target/walmart/supermarket for under $8. I paid $7 or so at my ridiculously overpriced Duane Reade in Manhattan.

I'd say, for the price, check out cetaphil (the second) or the olay cleanser, see how it works out for your skin, then move onto something more expensive if you want.

Also, to whoever posted about olive oil soap, there's a very interesting thing i've looked into called oil cleansing that uses castor oil as a cleaning oil cut with olive/jojoba oil. You basically put oil on your face and then sit over a steam bath to open up your pores and let the dirt come out and let the oil moisturize. Oil isn't inherently bad for your skin, the problem is when you have clogged pores. This is why drying your skin out with facial cleansers could actually cause more problems.

I have used several Jack Black products and I found them all quite mediocre.

For gentle, I'd recommend Aesop. I've been searching for the most gentle stuff I could find for shaving as well, and even after finding several others that are good, I found Aesop is the best. The shaving creme lathers so lightly you can barely see it and the cleanser is very soft and gentle. Your skin feels clean but not that weird rubbery feeling you get from other cleansers.

It's expensive but not moreso than a lot of other top end products.

The best facial cleanser: Purpose gentle cleansing wash.

It has only the neccesary ingredients for cleansing, so it wont irritate or cause acne if you're worried about that. It's not expensive either; in my experience expensive **** just has more irritants in it.

Shisheido is the best imo. It isn't packed with chemicals, which makes it very gentle and it does the job of cleansing very well.

Urth. The scrub is very refreshing and invigorating. The daily facial wash, on the other hand. leaves my face feeling very soft and moist. As you can probably guess, all ingredients are all natural.

+1

I switched to the gentle daily cleanser from the purpose bar cleaner. I probably will not switch to anything else because its worked so well for me, and for 8 dollars you get a big ass bottle.
