Nice thread. Why? Because on this forum...for whatever reasons...the white shirt is an outcast. Yes it is overdone in the suit wearing mainstream, but when done well, like anything, looks great.

It occurs to me that white shirt / white square doesn't work so well with dark suit + light tie

Light suit + dark tie is definitely better

But I think the best has to be dark suit + dark tie

Though the old guy looks good in all cases.

I don't really have any interest in arguing about what's "appropriate" or "good taste" or whatever....but it might be of interest to some that there is a long and almost concluded history of white-shirt-and-square-wearing with country clothes.

It's possible you may have to be the kind of person who consistently wears ties on the weekend, and possibly the kind of person who spends those weekends in a country castle, to pull this look off, but it is, or at least was, a thing. Now :foo: can post about why you'd be a complete idiot to wear such a thing.

Nothing is wrong with white shirts. However, they are more formal and limit options.

(No disrespect) but Foo has become an iconoclast with his war on white shirts (and white pocket squares)!! The white shirt is in itself iconic--it got the American man through the 20th century just fine. No need to change that. That stated, there is nothing wrong with blue shirts.
