The stereotype of Sweden is ridiculously hot blonde women and tall blond dudes. Also, metal bands that dress like vikings (although that's more of a Norwegian thing, I guess).

That Indians do not fall within the commonly applied American definition of Asians.

Well, that does not appear from your posts in this thread at least.

You said that France "had given ample proof" that it is weak militarily in the 20th century. This is simply ill-informed. France suffered a crushing defeat in 1940. That much is evident, even if, of course, the picture is more complex when you read carefully what really happened. Apart from that, it won the first world war, the war in Poland in the 1920's was a success, as were most colonial wars on a military basis (all except Indochina). That's hardly a dismal record. To say nothing, of course, of the oddity of reducing 1,500 years of history to the last 100.

In any case, claiming that a stereotype is actually based on facts is stupid in general. Russia fared worse than France in the 20th century (an equally crushing defeat in 1940, though they ahad more ressources and could fight back in the long term much more convincingly than France ; lost the first world war, lost Afghanistan). Poland did also, as did many others. Yet, the anglo-saxon stereotype of "surrendering monkeys" is only applied to France. Why? This a much more interesting question.

Likewise, statistics prove that the Russians do indeed drink more than other nations, but not that much more. The stereotype would have you believe that they drink several times more.

Anyway, back to the thread now.

My b. I'm used to people saying that the French are cowards, citing WWII, etc. and responded to that instead of what you said. I'm well aware that the French got trounced in WWII. I'll step on out of this discussion now.

If Texas had their own passport/military and ruled themselves for over 50 years they might actually think so...

The Italians have a worse reputation for surrendering than the French. There is a British sit-com called 'Allo 'Allo which I have found very informative for forming national sterotypes based on events in WWII.
