Mostly for the purpose of shirt buttons and cuff links. Is it something about the way it feels when your run your nail over the material? Is it possible to spot a fake visually?

Bite test. If it doesn't 'click,' it's plastic. Don't bite too hard, they break.

Putting your lips to the buttons is an easy way to feel the coolness of MOP.

You neednt actually bite. Instead take a button and tap it against your tooth. The MOP will produce a sharp sound, plastic will produce a muted sound.

Hold the back of your hand against it. Shell is cold. Tap or flick it. You'll develop a feel.

You guys are a riot.
Usually, you can tell just by looking at it, the way it shines. Also look at the back of the button, from there it's usually clear whether it's plastic, polished shell or unpolished shell. If that fails, and it rarely does, as a last resort I'll tap the button against my teeth - shell is hard and plastic soft.

This is a luxury design feature that prevents Zimmerli wearers from setting-off the the Mother of Pearl detectors at airport security stations!

Mr. Kabbaz can verify this little known fact.
