Are there any decent cobblers in Atlanta for very basic stuff like belt shortening - preferably near midtown?

I've had belts shortened by Bennie's on Piedmont. They did a good job.

+1 for Bennie's on Piedmont. They did a complete recraft on my Alden norwegian split front shell cordovans with double-oak sole. Charged me $125.

They do belts, too. Also, shoe shine is only $6.

The place up on Peachtree in Buckhead in the plaza across from Wendy's. I can't remember the name.

Not really sure I can recommend anyone wholeheartedly.

Trio (3145 Peachtree Rd # 117; (404) 233-8122) has always had the best reputation in town. The work both my wife and I have had done there was generally pretty good, but they're expensive and they have a real attitude.

Bennie's work is serviceable, but nothing to rave about.

I tried a place on Ponce in the complex with the Staples and Home Depot simply because it's reasonably close to where I live in Midtown. I was rather dissapointed with their work. I'm glad it was a belt (albeit a fairly decent RL Italy one) and not a shoe. I should've tried Bennie's, but I had no intention of being up there. Incidently I just dropped off some stuff with Mario Bosco today.

I'm tempted to get a good sewing machine and learn to do things like cuffing, functional button holes, etc. myself. Aside from the cost of the machine, the cost for the specific attachment would be comparable to what it costs each time to have it done professionally.

You can get a leather belt shortened!?!?! I need to do this. How much does this cost? I own a few belts that are too long.

Ansley shoe and luggage repair (I think that's what it's called) has a pretty good reputation, and the guy is nice enough.

I didn't pay much, but I had a casual belt that was just shortened from the tip.
The "real" way to do it involves shortening from the buckle side and you need to shorten by at least 3 inches or so. This is more costly, but you won't be able to tell that it was ever shortened. Bennie's can do it either way.

Another recommendation for Bennie's on Piedmont.

Have you ever taken your shoes to get shined, or Nordstrom Phipps?

I got them re-soled. I spent several months in Atlanta recently and when i needed some work done on some shoes I went through the cobblers in downtown and near where I lived, striking up a conversation and trying to see if they were just there for the job or if they were proper shoe geeks. the excitement and knowledge of the people at bennie's really impressed me.

I just called Nordstrom and Bennies to compare pricing of the shine guys, please tell me why I would choose Nordstrom over Bennies when they are more than double $.

Nodstrom: $2.50 a pair
Bennies: $6.00 a pair
