I"m so disappointed that they don't make the retro oxford anymore.
I love mine and after nearly a year, if I could I would order at least one more pair.
Like many, I'm a long time lurker, and first time poster. I just received my first pair of White's Bounty Hunters in Black Dress Leather a day ago. I know that the fit conversation is almost arbitrary, but I'm looking for insight from the forum after noticing a few fit issues with my first pair, and how best to proceed. Also, please keep in mind that this is my first pair of any sort of "nice" boot or shoe. I've never owned fancy leather shoes of any sort. I had Kyle evaluate my tracings and he recommended a 10D for both feet. I normally wear a 10.5 or 11 in most sneakers. I recently bought a pair of nice Scarpa hiking/backpacking boots that fit beautifully in a 10.5(normal width). There is a little extra wiggle room in the heel when wearing the thinnest socks.
My main questions/concerns, and where I'm trying to get some context on fit are:
- Overall, they seemingly feel too big. However, I notice the "biggness" mostly in the heel cup area. The heel can freely move in all directions when standing still. When walking, I don not notice much slipping, but clearly there is excess room in the heel area when standing or sitting. I have the boots tied tightly which might be why I'm not noticing the heel space much while walking, but only when I'm actively trying to move my foot around.
- I have about a thumb and a half of space from my big toe to the front of boot. I've read that a thumb is the optimal size. Again, I have tons of free room to wiggle my toes around up front, but I don't notice too much slippage when walking around.
- Bottom line, these boots feel very comfortable out of the box. Way more comfortable than I was expecting based on all the nightmare stories I've read. However, I was expecting them to fit much more tightly out of the box... which is why I'm conflicted on whether these in fact are the best fit for me. Also, I've only given them maybe a mile or two of light walking around my neighborhood, so nothing too strenuous like walking up and down hills etc etc.
***I suppose my main question is, based on other's experience, are the issues I'm describing sounding clearly like I would be better suited with a smaller size? Should they really be borderline too tight so that they stretch and conform? Or should I keep in mind that they feel comfortable out of the box and not get too obsessed with the fit?
***Lastly, I did speak with Brandon at Baker's and he said that one option could be sending them back to Bakers to have the heel clamped to be made smaller. I also asked about putting some leather in the heel area to help shorten the boot some as well, which sounds a little unconventional but he said could probably be done. Does this sound stupid? Do I simply need a smaller size, or better to slightly customize the fit of a boot that is a touch too big, rather than small?
Thanks for anyone's insight. Such a big investment that of course I want to nail the sizing, yet at the same time waiting another 4-6 weeks for a new pair is frustrating.
Very cool boot - kick zombies in style! From the first picture you posted above (the frontal view) the toe box almost looked like a swing last to me – in a good way. I guess that the many layers of material around the toe (2x celastic, bullhide cap, lining + the CXL vamp) add up to give the front of the boot more perceived volume.it was order from baker on 18 feb and got it exactly 8 weeks from the date order..
here is the spec for my pairs
