Looking to get some donegal trousers, possibly in light grey or maybe oatmeal like these:

https://www.walkerslater.com/martin-trousers-lw-oat-dn-tw

My question is, can donegal trousers be paired with patterned sport coats or do those clash? Would these oatmeal or a grey donegal trouser work with a Navy glen plaid sport coat or would it need to be a solid color sport coat?

Any examples/pics would be appreciated!

Not a fan of donegal trousers in general, and I think those look particularly not good. Trousers should be subtler.

I really like donegal trousers. I have 3 pairs: green, brown, and light gray. All were bought from Spier & Mackay.

The green pair are more traditional donegal in the sense that they have a full array of multi-colored flecking (red, blue, etc.)

The brown and the light gray are more subdued donegal, featuring tonal flecking (the brown pair has only white and yellow - the light gray pair has only black and white).

Predictably, the latter 2 pairs are far easier to pair with a patterned sport coat (though still easier to pull off with a solid).

The green pair can be challenging. Below is one of my attempts wearing the green ones - paired with a sage and beige guncheck sport coat made from Marling & Evans fabric:

Wow that looks great! I think if I do try to buy a pair it will have to be more subdued flecking. And maybe will wear them more with solid Sweaters rather than my patterned sport coats. Thanks for your input!
