Chelsea Boots

I am about to order a pair of brown C&J Chelsea 5's. These will be for jeans 95% of the time. Should I go leather or rubber sole? I am leaning towards rubber for the durability in the various weather climates and for the more "solid" look with jeans.

Thoughts? Any reason I shouldnt go with the brown?

I'd go for the leather. I think it's more elegant.

If they're for jeans that have even a moderate bootcut I'd go with dainite to add a bit more substance. My C&J Chelseas have a leather sole and it's just a bit too sleek, in my opinion, for 'streetwear'. I reserve them for dress and casual trousers.

I think it depends on the formality of your style. I usually wear a sport coat with jeans so leather-soled chelsea boots work better with what I normally wear. If I wore lots of hoodies or something, I'd probably choose differently.

I would say leather can be dressed both up and down - whereas rubber tends to be harder to dress up.

So, at least in my opinion, leather is more versatile. I will agree that rubber holds up better to fouler weather.

I think the brown is great - I have both black and brown.

I completely agree, and will move this thread to streetwear and denim, where it belongs. When will you guys learn?

Bah, I disagree with LAG. Dark wash Helmut Lang jeans, black chelsea boots with a leather sole, and a lightweight cotton Cucinelli knit is NOT streetwear. More like contemporary urban for those adverse to business casual...

I don't have any, but am intrigued by the CJ website.

I'm going for monkstraps as versatile shoes that can be worn with anything from jeans to a suit (though that would be breaking the rules). PLAL sells CJ Handgrades for $394.50, if you can wait. They quote as long as 2 months for shoes not in stock (I don't think the CJ Handgrade line includes a Chelsea boot, so the Chelseas would be cheaper). http://www.plal.com/products.htm

Polo Ralph Lauren occasionally has chelsea boots from the benchmade lines by C&J, along with Ralph's usual markup (30-60% over Pediwear, or 600 to 750 the stores versus $425-475 for pediwear). However, the Polo badged versions are more likely to be discounted or available on the US Ebay site than the Pediwear versions (Pediwear ran 30-50 GBP sales on the boots during the winter sale period). And of course, no risk of customs hold-ups for purchases in the US.

There's a C&J handgrade chelsea boot on the french site.... which seems to have an expanded list of handgrades (including a double monk). No idea if you can order from France, though. Perhaps you could special order from England?

Agreed.  The topic is about chelsea boots, not jeans, and C&J chelseas certainly don't constitute streetwear.
