OK, so this is not a good movie. The script is terrible, it jumps around, there are several sub plots that barely rise to the level of being called that. What is Jay's friend doing with the evil dude who gives him money? Really, Frosty's wife just died like that? Jay's mother's character is just an inkblot. Very bad and ill thought through.
However, it is one of the only two movies I know of shot on location in Santa Cruz and enviorns. (The other is of course the Lost Boys. Oh, there is one scene from Sudden Impacy shot at the Boardwalk.) They did a fantastic job photographing SC. Beautiful camera work. Awesome shots of Steamers, PP, and up north to Pescadaro and of course Pillar Point.
Though many details were all wrong, e.g., they clearly seem to live in Pleasure Point, which is Capitola, but when Jay gets in a fight, an SC PD car rolls up. Also, at one point jay paddles out to surf at night, the Boardwalk is behind him. Sorry, no dice, you cannot long board surf SC city beach. There are many little details like that.
But they get a lot of stuff right too, like the incredible dickishness of all SC surfers to any newb. It's legendary. That punk who smashes a guy's side mirror, that kind of **** happens all the time, slashed tires, keyed paint, etc. Although it is preposterous that Jay's first time in the water at age 9 is at Steamers, he'd have gotten killed. I can't say this for sure, but I would bet that like everyone else he first surfed Cowells. Also, nobody jumps off West Cliff to reach the break, that's a really dumb and pointless way to die. No glory, just stupid.
Also, they showed several big wave breaks that were not identified and that, as far as I know, do not exist. Really, there are only four in California and they are very intermitent and seasonal. Aside from Mavericks (and, rarely, Ghost Trees), there is nothing bigger anywhere near Santa Cruz, so the shots of them practicing in big surf that is clearly not Steamer (which is always crowded) were shot I don't know where. Also, the filmers must have cleared the water; the idea that some big break like that would be totally vacant is another myth of the movie. No way.
The shots of and in Mavericks itself were awesome. Worth the movie. Must have been very dangerous to shoot. Actually, a "making of" movie would be better than the actual movie.
Oh, and Elisabeth Shue is still hot as lit coal, even playing a haggard 45 y/o drunk.
