Like everyone else said above, this can be done (on most frames - not all). Check with your optometrist. On Oakley sunglasses, they [Oakley] will take your prescription and make the lens themselves. For other sunglasses, take them to your optometrist.

On a side note, if your company has a Health care FSA (Flexible Spending account), what you can do is this. Buy any designer sunglasses from anywhere and keep receipt. Take sunglasses to your optometrist and have them put in your prescription, but make sure receipt says prescription lens for your new sunglasses. With the optometrist receipt + your designer sunglasses receipt, submit the expense to your FSA administrator for reimbursement! They WILL reimburse you for the sunglasses + new prescription lens.

It can't be done with all frames, I wanted to change my sunglasses to eyeglasses last summer, but my frame wasn't suitable. So I ordered one eyeglass with clip-on sunshade from Zennioptical.com which only cost me $15.85. With the clip-on sunshade, I can switch between eyeglasses and sunglasses at any time. I myself think it is very convenient.
