There was a brief thread on this in 2004 but I'm not sure it gave me a satisfactory answer.

I have a pair of suit pants by Attolini that taper more than I would like. On each pant leg the seam on the inward facing side of the pant has about 0.75-1.0" extra fabric. This surplus is not present on the outward facing side of the pant leg. All of the surplus is also to one side of the seam (not split 50/50 anterior and posterior).

Is this extra fabric intended to be used to widen the leg if desired? Can this be done up past the knee? If you widen on just one side of the pant leg (the other doesn't have extra fabric) won't this throw the pant crease off?

I'd like to have the legs widened if possible but don't want to screw up an otherwise wonderful suit.

The uneven additional fabric seems weird, it may indicate that the pants have been altered before (are there any tell tale signs?). But where is the extra fabric? i believe pants are widened/narrowed around the inside/posterior so as not to throw off the crease from the pleat (if applicable). The rear crease is less important IMO. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to widen it by about 0.5", though I am not sure how much this will do for you. I also think you need to be careful which tailor you use. Other members should be able to chime in for advice on this . . .

yes you can have the legs let out. have the tailor bring the seams down to 1/4". also do this with the side seams. you will get a leg just a bit wider possably more to your liking. when the trousers are repressed the crease will be reset. this small amount should not affect the trousers.

I have a pair of Canali suit trousers that taper a bit too much for my liking. Assuming there is enough extra fabric, how much would a job like this cost?

Thanks for the replies.
The pants were new when I got them without alterations. Actually I have two Attolini suits and the pants are the same on both...not sure if I'll go to the trouble of widening them as the net gain will likely be only 0.5", but good to know it could be done.

0.5" x 2, right? If you have that much extra on each end of the fabric in the seam allowance you get a full inch total per leg. Unless I am misunderstanding something here. edit: apparently my reading comprehension isn't working today. :)
