Can a six button tuxedo vest be recut to a 3 button?

I have a 6 button SB silk formal vest (no lapels) that I bought because I really liked the fabric (very interesting color with subdued pattern) and it was dirt cheap. I have yet to wear it with my tuxedo officially but I have tried on the vest and jacket (SBPL) at the same time. Uggh. Not a great look with so much vest and so many vest buttons showing.

Could a competent tailor (armed with a photo of a traditional 3 button vest) recut/cut this down to something approximating a classic vest? Would this be an expensive experiment?

They are cut totally differently. Still, there is so much more cloth used for a 6 button vest than a 3, that it may be possible.

I would like to see the vest but in general you can wear a standard 6 button, festive silk vest with a single breasted dinner jacket. The scoop style can also be worn but it's not mandatory. If you get a vest made from the same fabric as the dinner jacket it should also be the 3 button scoop variety. I don't know if recutting the vest is possible but I sincerely doubt it is worth it.

I have to say the amount of vest and vest buttons showing seems discordant with the somewhat low gorge of my SBPL tuxedo jacket. I just feel a bit less vest showing would look more balanced.

I have a pretty competent tailor but as my Korean is never as good as his English I would prefer to find out if a recut is even possible before raising the issue with him.
