OK, time to get jiggy w/ it. Appt. w/ Time Warner next week. Cable, internet & phone, FTW. Give me top 5 things to watch - no BS! What are the channels I should be focusing on. Is there a cable equivalent to 'the Guide'?

Package is Value-line - no HBO, etc. Am also getting a DVR (is it actually a thing, or just a service?). How does this work? I'm imagining it as a tape-less VCR (i.e. tivo-like)....

Gossip Girl. Aside from that, everything worth watching is usually on HBO.

I just cancelled my cable subscription but kept InterwebZ.
There is really almost nothing worth watching on TV. YMMW

If you have computer you have Cable TV minus commercials and you also have DVR (MS Media Center or Freeware). Just buy long Ethernet cable to bring your laptop into the living room and hook your laptop to your TV via HDMI or S-video cable. You just solved your DVD, TV, Netflix watching problems.

Do you get AMC? They have madmen and breaking bad.
USA has Burn Notice.

Maybe Adult swim, particularly Venture Brothers

Otherwise everything else is on HBO and Showtime

If you like ramsay, f word and ramsay's kitchen nightmares on BBC America are both great. Other shows include USA's Psych and Burn Notice.

goddamn...there are so many shows to watch.

It really depends on what you're a fan of...reality, drama, comedy, sports...cable has it all.

Burn Notice, House, and Lie to Me are my momentary distractions. And Three Sheets.

I'm out most evenings and don't have a DVR, so I don't watch much TV at night. Of the TV I've seen, here are my current favorites:

The Ultimate Fighter, Season 10 (Spike)
Project Runway (Lifetime)
The Good Wife (CBS)
Leverage (TNT)
Dark Blue (TNT)

I assume you're getting HD? Occasionally I'll just flip HD channels and bask in its wonder.

I watch a few of the Food Network cooking shows. Also used to watch TLC's Take Home Chef for a laugh.

Three Sheets on Fine Living is good. Nat Geo, History and Bio. often have good stuff. All the news networks are appalling.

But, really, just do some channel surfing and enjoy it.

With a few random exceptions, HBO and Showtime are the only reasons that I continue to subscribe to cable TV.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. A TiVo box is in fact a brand of DVR.

Roma - this thread made me respect you even more, in spite of the fact you are caving in.
You can really watch most of the good cable shows online anyway, I think your most useful addition will be the football games.
I don't have cable/tv but I miss the sports the most. ESPN360 has helped that a great deal though.
