I charge $7 for USPS Priority Mail padded flat rate envelopes. They cost $6.80 USPS retail, add in sticky label paper, printer ink, tissue paper or plastic sealer bags, my time, etc. I think $7 is fair to get a buyer their item in 3 days or less. I only have the free USPS priority mail supplies, which can't be used for First Class mail. So for me to ship via First Class, I would need to order, or go out and find supplies that could be used for First Class mail. So generally, with some exceptions (repeat buyer, multiple items purchase, etc), I won't ship First Class.
Ok, thanks for clarifying. I've noticed that some sellers are charging $7 for shipping. Would it be fair to ask sellers for the cheaper option in your opinion?
Depends on the what they're shipping and service selected...
I charge retail for shipping. $7 for a Priority Flat Rate Envelope would be pretty reasonable. If they're charging $7 for a 3 ounce item shipped First Class, then they are over-charging. If they're charging $7 for something that will cost $15 to ship, then the charge is reasonable.
