Thread is TL;DNR. Why not just buy an e30M3? Would be less expensive, rarer, and probably more fun to drive.

This is the internet, was there something else we were supposed to be doing?

An original E30 M3 in good, not rusty condition with mileage isn't a beer run away from an engine rebuild is tough to find.

^^^ That analysis doesn't make any sense. In terms of performance, the 1M looks like it will match or exceed the M3 in most measures, yet cost less money. BMW is stating that it will do 0-60 in 4.7 seconds--and that's with a manual transmission, not a DCT. While less practical and comfortable than the M3, it will be moreso than the Boxster/Cayman, and cost much less than either.

If there are buyers who pick the M3 over the Cayman S, I'm not sure why you cannot conceive of them picking the 1M over it. In terms of performance and driving experience, it has much to offer over the other two. Anyway, buyers don't need to pick the 1M over the Cayman for it to sell. Each of these cars is quite different and will appeal to different interests.

As a Cayman owner, I assure you that we are not all asshats, and apologize on behalf of the non-asshats.

Anyway, if you want to compare lap times, check this out:

Also, Cayman R is meh. Porsche really let us down. BMW did far more interesting work for the 1M than Porsche did for the R.

Agreed. I assure you, though, that I'm a level 9000 non-asshat. I suck at asshatery. Just to clarify things, I don't own a Cayman. I agree that the 1M is one amazing car. Lap times, for an average performance car owner, depends on the skill of the driver. The Cayman S is arguably easier to drive fast on tracks. Most drivers will drive the Cayman S around the track faster than an E92 M3. Foo, please accept my apology for being such an immature asshat.

Uggh. Because there are quantifiable measures that reliably predict performance. You shot all those down because '3' is bigger than '1' and costs more money.
