Haha. I assume we're done with the op's question? (Trying to be careful with my grammar...)

Are all Englishmen so intolerant of cultural diversity?

im not surprised an Englishman doesnt understand it.

tipping is the ultimate extension of capitalism. as such it is a very american tradtion, the business owner transfers some of the risks of his business to the employee.

if you can afford to tip more you get better service. conversely, if you are a good looking girl you get tipped more. if the business is slow, the employee takes some of the loss.

this kind of thing doesnt sit well with people from more egalitarian cultures. it is also why people from said countries get offended when Americans tip overseas. they see it as a form of cultural imperialism.

Yes, we do not need diversity. There is a right and a wrong way to do things. The right way is the English way, everything else is wrong, why should we stand for it?

Actually I don't mind the tipping culture in the states (although $1 for handing me a $4 beer seems a little much) and I tip here whenever I get served at a table, if you can afford to eat out you can afford to tip. The not putting VAT on prices till you actually get to the counter does throw me every time though, that is pretty annoying.
