Are Gurkha Trousers a Trend or Here to Stay?

Again, if anything they were a menswear thing years ago - right now it's like joining the party once everyone's passed out and the booze is gone.
Which answers the initial question of the thread - it's a trend. It's a good reason to not buy into it and wait for it to pass instead of wasting your money on try hard pants.

I have the KS Gurkhas that DWW posted earlier in the thread and they were a pretty consistent wear in the colder months. They are cut well, have a nice color and weight, so why not. I can virtually wear them with anything I’d wear jeans with.

I agree I don’t believe I would likely steer any more into CM with them than an OCBD and a jacket or knit to pair but that’s pushing it.

Only thing worse than dressy ghurkas are suit trousers with 6" leg openings.
Are you senile or just autistic? It seems whenever your sensitivities are hit you bring this up which has already been debunked multiple times. Time to give it up Mr. Miyagi.

not that every fit has to be optimized, but I feel like all the dressy CM versions of this here would be better with a pair of regular trousers, whereas these would not be better off with regular chinos

I think that's fair, I'd say that the more tailored versions work like a slightly less versatile version of a chino. I think Ghurka's work better casually.

Not that I think this is a good thing, but I have two pair - 1 in light grey flannel and 1 in stone colored linen/cotton from suit supply. I tend to wear them as seasonal "fun" pieces. The light grey flannels have a matching jacket, so I do occasionally wear them as suit (but that's only because it was the only high-rise option and what I could afford).

I still wear them, and will continue to wear them as the occasional "fun" piece, but the most "tailored" I'd go with Ghurka trousers in the future would be the Manny trousers from Rubinacci in some sort of heavier cotton. With all that said, I think they look best in heavier cottons as casual wear, and have a limited use (at best) when made more tapered and tailored.

I have one pair of Manny pants from Rubinacci, a cotton (2% elastane) khaki in a dark Windows 95 teal I bought on steep discount. I am sympathetic to the look but I realized I don’t like the Ghurka closure functionally as much as the look. I had Mr. Ned make 4 of my last pairs of trousers with the double high, 2 button closure waistband with sidetabs which I prefer for the functionality and still has the high waist styling.

It’s 100% a trend but I’m not terrified of having something overly trendy at this point. Especially trousers which seem to have the shortest life of any clothes I wear.

I think that besides being trendy, there is something aesthetically pleasing. First of all, I think flat front trousers never looked elegant, it’s just that when they are “in” pleats look dated. Flat front trousers do probably look “sexier” though to people attracted to men, but the sexy-elegant spectrum is always a point of contention in menswear discussions, and something people have to find their own balance with.

Secondly, I think cummerbund-evocative waistbands as well as cummerbunds are a great look aesthetically. I think a V torso terminating in a waist wrap just has an aesthetic appeal. Even when the tall waistband craze is gone I’ll always argue for cummerbunds over waistcoats with black tie.

Finally, double monks have a stigma now? Is it just 2010s pitti associations? I still like them and I feel like I still see them everywhere anyway. However I did notice Rubinacci is moving towards the Genny trouser which is ghurka inspired but normal waistband height with one strap only, and also more single monks in photos. It’s like louder double straps are being reduced to quieter single straps across the board lol

I saw an elderly man the other day wearing tan double monks while carrying an LL Bean tote bag. I snapped off a salute cause I was looking at a menswear veteran.

This thread reads like a parody

"Ghurka pants done right"? LOLOLOLOL

They are all comical

Funny part was hipster @dieworkwear suggesting they be worn with a Led Zeppelin t-shirt because it looks "cool"

I think the super high waisted, multiple pleated wool versions are definitely “trendy” but to me, the cotton chino variety aren’t any more trendy than a pea coat or double rider. For example, these that I bought from RRL close to 10 years ago have aged very well and don’t read as try hard at all, but I’ve seen the several hundred Instagram photos with the hand in pocket casually parting the coat open to showcase the belt too, and yeah, I must admit it does come off a little over the top.

I have those exact pants and wear them with leather DRs, heavy flannel shirts, vintage tees, and your favorite Blundstone boots.

I think the best thing about them is that gurkha closure is really comfortable and keeps a shirt tucked better. Much more comfortable than using a belt. Also very useful to be able to change to the size without distorting the fit (that much). I have a couple of single pleated, quite casual pants. Might be a trend but I will still use them in years to come.
