There might be some issues with the jacket's waist being taken in, but I think 3 or 4 pleats on those trousers would help

Myth? More like a noble lie. It remains true, however, that what Fred Astaire wore casually looks more contemporary than the fashionable clothes of any decade since him. And historically-informed dress sense is clearly a good thing.

I agree, this is slim fit gone way too far. Those lapels are extremely narrow, they need to reach to half the shoulder distance. There is also way too much waist suppression and that's causing the pulling in the jacket. The flat fronts are also a mistake, and way too much break anyway. Those trousers need to be seriously tapered, shortened and cuffed. He obviously reads SF but he's taken the cuff showing to an extreme. I mean come on, 2 inches of cuff?!

I definitely wouldn't say that. A suit almost always look old fashioned anyway. I dress for the present not to evoke some mystical sartorial paradise lost so I'll have to disagree with you. And I don't care about the Duke of Windsor and his dress sense any more than I care about the Dukes of Hazzard.

Well, the young and short-sided must have their day. "Dressing for the present" inevitably involves some number of bad ideas.
