I am 5'9", 36" chest, 29" waist and 125 lbs. I wear an XS in AA t-shirts and almost every other American brand's clothes. As it's been said already, I think it would be safer to size down since their material is stretchy, unless you want the shirt to fit like a tent.

I washed/dried my Med AA shirt and the shrinking was minimal. Go with what your normal shirt size is at.

**** is so inconsistent it's almost not worth it. And then the washing and the shrinking...

I have similar proportions as the OP (I think?) 5'8-5'9, 38 chest, 145-150 lbs, and American Apparel just doesn't work for me. Small is too tight and Medium is too loose. Alternative Apparel on the other hand is much more consistent and a small fits me wonderfully.

What's your waist size and how do the Alt App shirts fit around your waist? Do you you have relatively broad shoulders?

I pretty much have the same build except for the shoulders. Do you happen to have a pic with your Alt shirt?

Yeah I'm having the same problem as the OP. I have some AA smalls which are a little bit too tight and short for me so I can't thinkwhat size i should get from Alt App.

I am 5'9, 145 lbs, swimmer build. I wear small AA shirts. The medium ones fit like crap. I think XS would be pushing it to the terms of ultimate muscle t. Right now its just modestly defined, and not overly done showing off your muscles or whatever.

I've been getting AA shirts for a while and i keep track of sizing, If your natural relaxed chest is a 38 u need a M. I wear a 40 jacket, 160 lbs, i fit in small cause i let it stretch out a bit and with medium the sleeves would be to long. I'm pretty sure my natural chest is only 37/38 though and i barely fit in small anymore.

When people say sizing is all over the place, do they mean sizing is inconsistent over colors or cuts? or just in general? 'cause i don't see the point in going to a store to try something on if the wholesale shirt is going to fit differently...

It's inconsistent on everything. I've generally wear small so that's what I buy in American Apparel.

Own some v-necks, tees, couple cardigans. Small does not always equal small in American Apparel. In fact, of the two cardigans I own from them, one measures to what most brands would consider a extra small and the other measures to what most brands would consider a medium. On the v-necks, one fits perfectly and the other is way too long.

Serves me right for buying from them online.

Like everyone else who has expierence with AA sizing , it is all over the place. With tshirts you should really buy one that fits you will and after washing it hang dry them. I never machine dry my clothes anymore
