I did a reverse JFWR, moved from central Illinois (UIUC undergrad) to NYC for grad school (NYU, law). I was surprised at just how mild the winters were in NYC, although that's probably the only thing about NYC that can be characterized as "mild," LOL. Nonetheless, I loved NY. Loved Champaign-Urbana, too, still hope to bring my kids to the College of Veterinary Medicine Open House someday.

It's insane how quality American shoes and the U of I seem to go together.

Are you in NYC now? I go back regularly to visit family. But I must admit: It is really great out here, too.

I graduated from U of I law school.

I'll never forget Jupiter's Pizza. I think Gumby's Pizza closed but they were awesome too.

Chambana used to be so small. Its growing fast, a really decent place to buy a home and raise a family.

You live in Vancouver now?

I'm in LA, have relatives in CT that I visit every couple of years, and generally spend a day or two in the city when we are out east.

I loved NYC but could never imagine raising a family there. It can be done, obviously, but the cost of living was so daunting that I just... never even contemplated doing it. Of course, now I live in another insanely expensive coastal metropolis, so... maybe I could have given NYC a second look.

There was quite a bit of culture shock at first. It took about a year to truly get acclimated. Once I understood New Yorkers / east coast metro people it was easier to live there, but I still missed the Midwest sometimes. Did you have culture shock in the other direction? It seems like most people who go from the east coast to the Midwest have one of two reactions -- they immediately realize that they can't stand the Midwest and start plotting an exit, or they really like the Midwest and appreciate its differences. It's one extreme or the other, they hate the Midwest or love it, never in between. Obviously, not everyone who likes the Midwest chooses to stay, but it seems like people from the east coast can tell right away whether the Midwest works for them, so to speak.

The Midwest has been a very pleasant experience. Nice folks, low cost of living, and lots and lots of things to do. Plus, booze is cheap.

I find New York home and great, but I appreciate the Midwest vibe and the benefits to it. The bars closing at 2 am is not my scene, though. That sucks. But I like the overall lifestyle out here, too, as a nice contrast to my NY life.

I could live here for a long while and be satisfied. I wouldn't mind getting a permanent position at this university; however, I like having a break for some NY time, too.

It is very hard to raise a family in NY. Prices are insane. It is just so damn expensive.

HOnestly, I have a lot more fun out here in the Midwest as everything is closer (time wise) and cheaper. So I can go out t o eat, drink, have fun without breaking my meager bank account.

They just had the Vet Med open house last week, kind of weird, lots of virtual stuff, social distance everything.....typical 2020 COVID stuff

I have 5 MTO shell shoes on order currently from 3 different shoe makers. The last pair I ordered was the first to arrive - today. Way to go Allen Edmonds!

The Chili shell Strands were an attempt at duplicating @mdubs Garnet shell Strands.

The Chili has a bit more brown in it.
Not too shabby.

Cherry, Kim said these go with my pants and I told her that I only let my wife lie to me.
