Well, other than custom ordered ball gloves, shoes are the only somewhat expensive "toy" purchase she has to tolerate. No bass boat or duck club dues or mid-life crisis Porsche. Besides, the Carmina Detroit last doesn't work for her.

Speaking of lighter shell, today seemed a good time for AE truffle/capachino.

While on our clothing tangent, I think at least one or two people mentioned the Fulton slim/stretch chinos from banana. Not a bad price when on sale. Not sure how durable they will be long term, but right now that means more money for shoooooz.

    Amoks and chinos today.

Fell in love with Strands the first time I saw them. I actually come to find that I'm not a huge fan of less ornate balmorals, although I do have the obligatory pair of black PA's. I have two pairs of Strands and two pairs of McAllisters and my wife seems to think I should be set with dress shoes forever. Little does she know...

After nearly two official outings, creasing on my left McGregor is more severe than I would prefer. I guess these were cut from a suboptimal part of the hide.

Look for 14.92% off beginning near Columbus Day (get it?) and be pleasantly surprised with a few models having larger discounts.

When you receive them, can you let us know if they come with an extra set of cream colored laces? Before online they showed the brown cxl boot with cream laces and I'd like to know if they actually come with boots. Thanks!

First, I've never felt very "welcomed" at this location. Very different from my Leeds and Atlanta experiences, where the associate literally would have helped me try on half the store if I wanted. Some of it is because I arrive in jeans or chinos and shoes that are more on the casual side. Probably another is I look younger than most of their clientele. Maybe my customer profile shows I mostly purchase sale items or 2nds?? It's not like I go in, try a bunch of shoes on, eat up the SAs time, take away from others receiving service, only to leave empty handed and later order online.

You would think this would change with multiple visits, showing my knowledge of the brand (without being snooty), wearing the brand every time I go in, etc. Nope. Seems I need to be in a suit with a pair of black Park Aves on. Speaking of,... I am reminded that the PA is their best selling show every time I go in there, even after telling them I am good on 65 lasted bals.
This is the third time in the last 6 months I have gone in with the plan to purchase at least one new offering, and have walked out empty handed. Usually it is because they do not have anything other than D widths. Or the manager just flat out tells me that my low arches just "don't work with that shoe." Never a recommendation on something else that would work or trying various combinations of length/width changes. I have even called in to ask if they had specific sizes or could order them in. I've always been told no, but I could come in, try things on, and then have them order something in - after I paid for it. In the past I have told them I think it is ridiculous to pay for something without trying it on first. Also, what is the point of shipping to store then? Might as well ship to my house and skip the downtown traffic/parking hassle.

I was set on the Higgins Mill, but they didn't have a 9D. Only had 9.5D in the floor model. No B widths at all, some non-D between 9.5-12. They balked at brining in other sizes, saying they had to be made and then if I didn't want them would just sit on the shelf. Plus the sale "would be over by the time they came in." I really wanted the boots, and wanted to give this guy a sale for helping me. I pushed a little further and we compromised on paying for 9.5B, with them ordering in 10B also. 2-3 weeks wait. Grrrrr.

Now, a quick recap of the new styles I saw in person:

-Higgins Mill will probably fit most people TTS/65+0.5 in length. For those that like extra room, maybe even up a whole size from 65. Some will want to drop down in width, though I think it is only offered in B,D,E, and EEE. Good looking construction and the suede tongue was a neat feature.

-Not my style, but the new Liverpool is pretty sweet looking in person. And it feels amazing. I can totally see what @TexasTexter was saying about them fitting like a glove. @Neo1 , I'd love to hear your thoughts if/when you try it on. Also, does anyone know the back story about AE needing a new machine to make the vamp curve the correct way?

-I only saw 1 of the Neumoks. It was this ugly matted grey, but was told the ones coming out have a different shinier finish.

-I really liked the natty Academy, but saw too much of an overlap with the HM, at least when my pants covered the top. I'm not sold on the dark uppers and light welt. Just not my style. Same with the Alumnus, though I actually liked the black in this better than the academy. For those that were deciding between black and natty in the Academy and Higgins, I'd recommend the natty HM and black Alumnus instead.

-I LOVE the St. John's, but can't justify it, having already owned the Franciscan. Like the latter, the dark chili looks the best!

-The update on the Cascade is nice, just not my style.

-No austerity, suede/cloth Leidens, or suede Liverpool. Thankfully I did NOT see the Union.

For those still reading... I saved the BEST bits of information for last:
-I was told that Horween's supplies have increased, and they might have another color option (perhaps a darker walnut?)
-There would be a sale on shell, perhaps during RDA or sometime later in the fall.
-And there would be a limited version of the trunk show, "either late fall or more likely spring"

FYI, the natty pair I tried on had brown laces. I'll let you know what is included in the box... in 2-3 weeks. Grrrrr.

I will be checking for anything shell daily now. I'm dying for another color. I have color 8 in some old florsheims and brown in my strands. Navy, whiskey, walnut whatever works for me and I'll be buying it instantly haha. I was debating waiting for some black shell PAs to go on sale but given how little I wear the calf version I see no point as it would essentially replace these and collect dust. That trunk show sounds fantastic too. MORE SHELL!

Funny how quickly they can add up. And how easily the justifications start. "Just one more and I'm done for a while." "This model is different enough." "Might as well get in while its on sale."

If I keep the Higgins Mill that will make 35 AEs in my current rotation. The 10th CXL model, at that. (Have I mentioned I love CXL?) Somehow I've managed to avoid shell this long.

You won't catch me at 50+ though. I am actually looking to downsize a little. Spent the last few months wearing a deep rotation, attempting to figure out what is headed for the sale and keep piles.

I never understand the intention behind a salesperson refusing to turn over every stone in order to get you into a pair of shoes. I mean, you are paying his/her salary, and they tell you because one size did not work that they don't want to bother?! What is the logic in that? Are they afraid the shoes won't fit an you will try to return them later? That's the only logical thing i can think of. I've only had this experience once, but it definitely turned me off.

The relatively new policy of having brick and mortar stores with little to no non-D inventory to try on, coupled with reluctance or flat out refusal to order in something for you to try on, is about the dumbest thing AE has done. This seems especially true of their Indy shoes.

If I have to guess what size works, wait until it is built, then have it drop shipped to me, I'm not going to pay $495 for the Indy. I'll pay $55 more and get a hand welted version from Bonafe via Skoak.

It's just crazy that they're doing. Why wven have a B&M store.

I agree @Count de Monet . I easily could have skipped the trip to the store, gone online, ordered 4 different sizes on my credit card, then returned 3 pairs. Instead I was hoping to see the product in person, engage with a sales associate, try to find the best possible fit of a brand I am fiercely loyal to, support my local economy/store, give someone the commission, save AE on unnecessary shipping (both ways),... and maybe even be talked into picking up an additional pair or two that caught my eye.

I wonder if this is the bourbon shell that Horween teased a few months back?

Quote: I would agree. I've purchased a few pairs from him/her and all have been good experience. He even worked around an eBay payment issue (there was a problem with their website) to help me pay and also have the shoes shipped the same day as purchased. As for the reasonable offers, it seems as if the shoe has been listed for a while, he is generous on what he accepts - I would assume to move inventory quicker, as I found out by making an offer on a few pairs I wasn't entirely sure about (last, style, etc.) and got for a good deal.

@Count de Monet You know, I was drafting (for a while) something to email to Paul g, trying to come up with the most polite way to put it, and now you stole my thunder. Just hope he reads your post [IMG]

Ha! She has a better eye than my GF. She thought my chili McGs were the same shoe as my bourbon strands until she saw me polishing them together...with a couple other pairs she wasn't privy too. She wouldn't care. Except she would probably appreciate some finger hardware at some point.

I always thought one of AE's stated points of pride was its vast array of sizes + widths. When you refuse to make those available to the customer in store, you completely undercut your sales mission.

Tell it, brotha, tell it. They are intentionally negating one of their advantages over other brands, both cheaper, domestic ones, and more expensive foreign ones.
