The secret to black on black on black is that you have to be Asian and you have to have a Mercedes S-class.

The hate for black is marginally overdone, but it is a reaction to the fact that a lot of young men buy a black suit is one of their first suits, which is almost always a mistake.

Black is fine for an evening suit. If you're only wearing it at night, fine. Most young men need a suit they can wear to interviews if they're going to drop the money on a first suit.

Black is often worn in the business world by younger men here, but it is _not_ as traditional or conservative a choice as navy or charcoal. People should at least be aware of that before buying a black suit.

I had a black suit as a third suit at one point (no longer fits). It was, in retrospect, a mistake. Black suits look decent to me in a fashiony way, with dark shirts underneath, cut slim, no tie. They also look good with a white shirt and a 'hard' coloured tie - though in this way they are almost too formal for daytime business wear. And that's all you can do with them. You can dress all the way down or all the way up, but they don't do in between very well.

If he was graduating from college, and this was his first suit, I would have given the 'don't get black first' speech.

He's graduating from high school. By the time he needs an interview suit, he'll have outgrown this. I wouldn't do black on black, but wtf, its his prom. I just don't think its worth blowing a ton of money on. Get something slim cut in a blended fabric from a fashiony spot like zara/h&m, and accept this is a 'club/evening' suit, not a daytime suit. And that's fine.

Save some of that money for a new pair of swanky rubber soled, square-toed shoes! And always remember, tailoring is for amateurs!

Enjoy!!

My recommendation? Don't get your style guidelines from people who have no idea about your social milieu. What's cool in London probably ain't cool in Albuquerque, and vice versa.

Come here to learn about fit, terminology, brands, and fabrics.. but as for style, come up with your own.

+1.

I've pretty much weeded all-black out of my wardrobe since I started getting serious about clothes, but I think at some point I'll start incorporating it again when I want to cop a rocker look. If this is a suit for impressing teenage peers, black *can* be a good way to go. But if you want to use this suit for job interviews after graduation, then listen to these SF guys.

its that easy if you dont possess these qualitys you wont be able to hold yourself well in a black suit ,its like putting a wimp in a leather jacket, only worse.
