I have only been to the bar. Is the Hotel really all that great?

Both are nice, but the potential problem with these -- as well as The Standard -- is that they're not convenient to WeHo. If you want to be reasonably close to your friend's place, you'll need to stay in BH, WeHo, or Hollywood proper.

You could always stay at the Roosevelt and drink at the bar with Tom Waits . . .

The rooms are nothing special but it's an easy place to have a good time. I guess it depends on what you are looking for. If you just want to be swaddled in luxury then its not the right choice. If you want a place where you are likely to have an oddball experience (like cooking a steak in the hotel kitchen with an actor you know on Sunday morning, for example) or at least meet some intreating folks near the pool, the chateau is your place.

I almost never stay in hotels in LA either despite visiting several times per year. However, if I were to choose a hotel without location being too much of a consideration, I'd go with Shutters. I often just go for drinks.

I have a good friend who grew up with one of the major rock acts. They invite him to the Chateau when they are in town for award ceremonies, shows, etc. He says he likes to dress in a non-Hollywood manner and hang out there for brunch. He gets a kick out of the insecurities of everyone trying to figure out who you are.

What is "non-Hollywood manner"? Like an I-gent?
There are probably several distinct "Hollywood" manners. I assume, given what you mentioned about your friend, that for him it refers to the rocker/hipster look?

He doesn't dress like an agent, a rocker, hipster or in a graphic t and denim uniform. He has a touch of Lapo in him, but just a touch. He came to two San Francisco SF meet-ups but doesn't fit the iGent look either.

i live in la, so i never stay in hotels here, but i've always wanted to stay at the chateau. just for the vibe of it. and i'm hardly a hipster kind of guy. it's one of those places where interesting things just seem to happen.
OTOH, if it's luxury you want, the beverly hills four seasons is west hollywood adj and very nice.

Peopleofwalmart.com will give you some non-Hollywood examples. I'm guessing anything stonewashed to light blue or referencing NASCAR, the WWE , or the GOP is non Hollywood. Maybe he's wearing his "NASCAR dads for Palin" tshirt?

I've stayed there many times. Nice, but a bit boring for the young folks.
