well, then we get into a whole thing about earning potential, I was assuming a similar pay curve in the long run. sure, NYC's got a lot of opportunities, doesn't mean you can't make more living in the boonies...as long as you have fast internet, fed ex and plane fares, you can pretty much do anything you want.

There's no real big need to live in a big city if you're already making some decent money and are well-networked to the outside world. Overnight flights are no biggie. Living in the sticks, I would say you even have more freedom to go anywhere you want.

Just looked at some real estate in Fargo. Stuff that goes for $700K looks like standard U.S. fare. I was expecting sprawling mansions for that amount of money.

No hesitation New York for me. I've just applied for a big pay cut for a job in a bigger city I really like. I've been on an average wage in a small town **** hole for 2 years and have come to the conclusion I would rather be poor(er), feel like I was living my life and be surrounded by possibilities and opportunities.

There are mitigating circumstances in my situation - Its a city I've wanted to live in since I was 16, I'll be with the same firm and can keep my pension, and will be working in what to me is a more interesting and worthwhile area.

There was a time not too long ago when my wife and I were considering a move to London. Would have been highly disruptive to our lives, involved a significant downsizing in income (by say 60%). She'd have had to shut down her business here. We'd have had to live in a much smaller place and cut way back on lifestyle stuff.

It would have also involved moving away from family and taking our boys out of school here and putting them into school there.

We still considered it and might well have done it despite all of those issues, just for the experience of living in London for a time. As it turned out, the opportunity didn't materialize so we never had to actually make the decision.

I'd probably pick NYC in this circumstance.

sounds like 125k in nyc is tough. i am thinking, though, that is just what you will get at the begining, no? bigger cities give you greater opportunities. anyways it will suck big time if you dont raise your income with time going on, no matter which place you choose to live in or work at.
