I wouldn't do a fly front.

As for patent vs. calf, if I were simply going out and buying any pair I wanted I would get a calf plain toe oxford.

I prefer grosgrain. It looks better, adding nice textural interest. Satin is perfectly fine, though.

I just picked a pair of these up (RLPL by EG Peerings) just for this purpose.

wow-- "spit shine" polish those RLPL shoes, and you are good to go with your upcoming tux events. those look great!

If only you were a 42L, there is a superb example of a RLPL suit up on the auction block right now......or better yet, if only it were a 40R I could snap it up for myself!!! this tux is f*cking AMAZING in person.

I guess a few posters disagree with my suggestions against satin lapels, but I am firm in my convictions/ these acts of agression will not stand, man! Grosgrain ribbed silk lapels are anything BUT dull, and are the height of elegance. Do not be swayed by the shiny satin if you have the choice!

+1 You have my full support sir, I was never a fan of the shiny satin.

Yes they will.
I have a tux of theirs that is over 40 years old.
Classical, still looks good.
Contemporary equivalent from them around $1800

They did indeed. Picked up the Phineas double breasted midnight blue, it was near perfect off the rack. Thanks to all.

I disagree, though have patent pomps. I think they mostly scream "cheap rental." Polished calf is perfectly appropriate and I'd suggest spending that money on other elements of the ensemble.

I've actually come to the same conclusion. Anyone have a strong recommendation for a sleek plain-toe balmoral? Is the C&J Aintree (though a blucher) advisable? Or should I just polish the hell out of my C&J Belgraves (though they're cap toe).

I can't help but think that the Duke of Windsor would disagree. If I had my druthers, I think I might go for cloth-topped patent oxfords, which you sadly never see anymore.

Paul Stuart is a fantastic place and the service I encountered on my several visits was top notch. I'm glad you found something that you're happy with for styling, fit, and price.

For shoes, I bought a pair of Peal and Co. plain wholecuts in calf and shine the bejeezus out of them. I think they look great without having the plasticy look/feel of patent.
