To be fair, about 4-5 years ago, I saw something on the shoelace site that completely changed my shoelace world.

Never would have thought that I was tieing my shoelaces wrong (and if someone came up to me in college and told me so, I would probably be like "piss off, I can tie my shoes just fine")...but by making one little change, I no longer have trouble with large round or rawhide laces.

Basically I was tying them into a granny knot instead of a square knot but the bow and the fact that I don't use the bunny ears method obscured that fact (which was sad since I am pretty damn good with knots and would never knowingly use a granny knot). my laces looked like this when tied (notice that the bow is sort of vertical):

They should look like this (horizontal):

As for the actual tieing, I use what ian calls the "standard knot" (bunny ears is the "two loop knot") so the easiest fix was to do the bow part of the knot the same way but switch the direction in which I tied the starting half knot. Since I made the change, I have never had to double knot a lace again, even the thick round ones that never used to stay (the soft flat laces like in the picture stay no matter how you tie them...)
