Yes, I would. Even wearing a derby or split toe should be avoided for interviews IMHO, especially for something like a residency interview where you may meet with many people and you don't want to give ANY of them a bad vibe. Personally I'd even stay away from broguing except for potentially a stamped captoe, something like a Park Avenue would be perfect, as Sator said.

Alden shoes in shell cordovan are about $500-$550 retail and will last you until you retire if you take care of them. You can also buy them from Brooks Brothers if that is easier for you. They will have a bit more "flash" than a regular old calfskin Allen Edmonds or something like that. But at the same time they are completely classic. Thus I would get a pair of lace-up shell cordovan Aldens in your position. A second pair of something like Allen Edmonds would be great, but now you're talking quite a bit of money.

I agree completely. Steer well clear of monks.

If you can afford a pair of laced black cordovan Alden Oxford shoes all kudos to you.

EG's and cordovan Aldens are great, if you have the budget to support them. If you don't have it now when you are a student, you will have it when you become an attending. For now, something like the AE Park Avenue sounds perfect, and you may even be able to pick it up on discount.

that said, i would definitely love to wear shiny buckled sleek black monkstraps at night out or on the dance floor (back when i was a kid)
