I think I've gotten these at Wegman's in Maryland. Pretty good.

At the risk of losing the respect of anyone who respects me, my mom is from South Orange and that entire side of the family won't shut up about Jimmy Buff's. For grilling, we always buy Thumann's. I think they top them with some jarred stuff--Sabrett's?

Now I live near DC, where the sausage of choice is the half smoke, a pork/beef sausage with onions, mustard, and chili.

Where's there a Wegman's in Maryland? I know there's one in Fairfax or some such.

A couple of years ago I became intrigued w/ a Berkley establishment (Top Dog?) and did some initial research which I have since misplaced - any info appreciated....

top dog is awesome. the guy who used to run the southside one (by the bars) was incredible at dealing with drunks at 2am. amazing how he had the capacity to take orders from a line of alcoholics that ran out the door and halfway down the street while grilling all the dogs and keeping all the orders straight.

some of the SF libertarians would also like the guy - he had newspaper clippings supporting his libertarian positions all over the place.

They are the reigning champs. Really, I've never had a hot dog close in taste and quality to what they put out. The same goes for the rest of their beef.

Waaaay up in Hunt Valley. I find myself up in the Towson area often, and it's worth driving the few extra miles for some Wegman's goodness.

Speaking of Chicago dogs, it's all about Hot Doug's and their duck fat fries.

The line is always ridiculous.

My favourite of their rotating list: brandy infused Portuguese chorizo with saffron rouille and boucherolle cheese Of course, they also do regular hot dogs, but man those gourmet ones are SOOOOOOO good. It's really the only time I can eat a hot dog without ketchup* and not feel gipped. (* admission: I always add ketchup to my "chicago style" dogs)
