I used to work at a Wendy's in high school. The burgers in general were the best of fast food that was available in my area when they were made properly. Sometimes the grill guy gets lazy, lets them sit too long and get hard, or the sandwich builder was in a rush or just a sloppy worker who didn't give a **** while only making $5.15 (min wage at the time).

Generally I'd make my own while working there and they were pretty damn good. Haven't had a Wendy's burger in a long time though; I usually get the spicy chicken sandwich.

After 7 or 8 visits to Owen & Engine I tried the burger for the first time last night. It's really, really good!
Just cannot compare it to Au Cheval, the styles are too different. As basic as the Au Cheval burger is, O & E is just as simple in a different more refined way.
O&E is like the Godfather movies. Three films, three cuts of beef. Short rib, brisket and chuck.
Au Cheval single burger is two patties and gritty like Goodfellows/Casino.
O&E is the Beatles, Au Cheval is the Rolling Stones.
I feel good eating an O&E burger but tell myself I can't eat at Au Cheval too often, it's a touch decadent.
Pricing is about the same because fries are ala carte at Au Cheval, included at O&E.
I like both of them for different reasons! Cannot say one is better than the other.

Comparing other items
Better fries at O&E. Don't care for the flavor imparted in Au Cheval fries from cooking them in pork fat.
Garlic aioli at Au Cheval is better, O&E is bland. O&E makes their own ketchup, sweet, a bit acidic but very good.

As a side note, Burgers at O&E on Tuesday nights include a beer and bourbon shot.

O&E has a killer meatball hoagie on the pub menu after 10. Au Cheval has made in house bologna sandwich if you want to change things up.

This is a fantastic comparison of the two burgers.

Wow, yeah, this is a really good comparison of the 2 burgers. Really hard to compare the 2, but they are probably my favorite 2 burgers in Chicago.

+1, that spicy chicken sandwich is by far one of my favorite items to get off of any fast food menu. :slayer:

On a side note, I recently tried Small Cheval. I can't compare them to Au Cheval, since I've never had it, but the house style bacon cheeseburger I had was dope (Definitely recommend getting it house style). Also, the golden fries were surprisingly very good and they actually had Fresca! I can't remember the last time I went out and a place had that. As icing on the cake, the atmosphere was relaxed and no wait is always a plus.

Went back to Owen & Engine this weekend. Scotch egg plus burger. I'm good on the burger front for a few weeks.

i came to the same conclusion myself recently. i love the meat of the minetta black label, but the bun can't hold it together.
love a potato roll, they stand up nicely to the texture of a good burger imo.
i've grown to love the smoke shack at shake shack. with a single patty, i find two is overkill.
might have to go and try a mcd for old time's sake.

black label is so good
