Thanks @Claghorn for posting that Helter Skelter audio clip. Haven't heard that track for ages. It's a great one, and very uncharacteristic of The Beatles, just showing how versatile they were as a band.
I'm actually old enough to remember when the White Album was released. My older brother bought it (he had all the Beatles' stuff, although he actually preferred the Stones) and I listened to it obsessively. I remember being terrified by Helter Skelter - I really thought the Fab Four had gone over to the dark side with that track, especially the chilling remonstration about finger blisters right at the end (which I believe is Ringo's voice).
Paul was recently asked in an interview what his all-time favourite self-penned Beatles song was. His flippant answer was "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?".
