And they have been worn by everyone, including legitimate businessmen.

They can be great. I got a Lesser 13 Oz blue/black bird's eye made up as SB1 with peak lapel made up a while back. I think its beautiful. It is a business fabric and it still turns the ladies' heads... someone - Will of asuitablewardrobe wrote a short essay on the "formality" scale of suits.

http://asuitablewardrobe.dynend.com/...n-details.html

He said something that I thought intuitively before Will wrote the essay. He wrote that the Dinner Jacket , was semi-formal dress and the more closely a lounge suit jacket follows that follows that pattern the more formal it is. I think that is a fair summary: peak lapels, SB1, and straight unflapped pockets... With this in mind, I really can't see the lounge suit with peak lapels (just like the DJ) as intrinsically flashy or dandified. (That said, I wouldn't want a SB1 suit with peak lapels and unflapped pockets. Flap those pockets and I'm in.) I don't think the elements of the jacket for semi-formal dress are antiquated or outmoded, at least not where I use my suits, in the City of London. I think the SB peak lapel suit can be beautifully elegant. Of course the cut and the fit on the individual, fabric (texture, colour, sheen) etc make a big difference to any to any garment. J

That's why I said it looks either dandified, or following current trends, or vintage.

Yes, but are you concerned about current trends?

I feel more conspicuously dressed, more self-conciously like a "sharpie", in SB peak than in DB.

FWIW.

I don't care what others think ... but depending upon the cut of the coat ... and the cloth selection ... they work for me. I certainly have them in my wardrobe. But again ... I had them before Style Forum was a twinkle in J's eye. I had them before the Internet was a twinkle in Gore's eye.

I have friends who say the same thing. But having had SB peaked coats in my wardrobe for as long as I can remember ... I've never felt conspicuous when wearing one. I think only the most stylishly conscious notice.

I do find the SBPL fascinating because the justifications given by the Haters are not that justified...

I find myself on the fence on that one...

Like the idea of it but don't know if I would spend a lot of money on one...

They look good on others at the moment...

Well, you're a conservative dresser, which is fine. Ultimately, you have to feel comfortable in your clothes, some people can carry off more colourful ensembles, whereas others can't or don't want too. The worst however, are the shrinking violets who try to be a dandy and then fuss and fiddle all day/night. You can look your very best in a simple navy suit, crisp white shirt, plain shoes and toned tie.

I am inclined to think that, all other things being equal, no one outside of the forum will notice the difference between a notch and peak lapel. So if you like wearing one, do so without apologies, since there is no right or wrong occasion for it in the eyes of most people, since they don't have eyes that see such things.
