A Sam (and David) Hober Tie Appreciation Thread

Is the standard construction for the grenadines to be unlined or not lined all the way through to the tip like NOBD's? With this type of construction does the tip of the tie look somewhat "see-through" from the front?

I prefer grenadines to be see through, personally. I call them lingerie for the neck.

Just placed an order for a maroon tie with gold pin dots, and a cream pocket square.

So far the service has been exceptional. Never before has a company responded to my emails quicker than I could get back to them!

If anyone has any of the Sam Hober wedding ties (or the glen plaid, which isn't categorized in the wedding section of the website) and can take a picture of them, I'd love to see them. I got a couple of swatch sets and really want to do at least my tie and maybe more at SH, but it would help to see what they look like out in the wild.

Our standard construction for a grenadine is for it to be lined with a dyed pure wool interlining for the darker colors. We hand dye our interlinings and hand cut them also.

Grenadines without tipping that have rolled edges are something interesting and unusual.

You will occasionally see rolled edges on ties in Italy and elsewhere but they roll the edges very quickly which gives a "rustic- wrinkled" look as opposed to the elegant look of our ties. It can easily take us an hour or more for 6 and 7-fold ties to roll the edges.

The very small details of tie construction are somewhat like the fit and feel of a well made car - subtle but you can feel it when you open and close the door.

Can't wait to own one (or many) Hobers!

David has been incredibly responsive in answering questions especially in light of the time difference.

Counting down the month until my new tie arrives. Given the customization ability, and my shorter stature, I can't imagine going with RTW again. I can see this turning into a problem.

Very slowly (as in plans started around 4 years ago) we have been working on a project to grow our own madder roots here in Thailand and make madder silks with natural madder dyes. Indigo is already grown and used as a dye in Thailand so with a few other dark colors we would be all set.

What's the current status of your long term plan to grow madder in Thailand and explore natural madder+indigo madder ties?

I can more or less track this by searching for ancient madder on the web, finding posts in various clothing fora all over.

It's a fascinating experiment. As near as I can tell from reading, lye produces the madder tie feel, but it is an (3-fold?) indigo wash that produces the characteristic dusty appearance. It'd make a good photo-essay, if one had the energy and enthusiasm.
