Also consider

Calf might be more tolerant of stains than suede if you intend to wear them on rounds. Also consider buffalo or kudu for more surface interest.

pig skin is nice too if you want something interesting

i second this.

i don't understand the babying of suede. in my experience, suede is very resistant.

i have seen normal pig suede it is quite intersting, carpincho is nice too, but it is a glove leather from what i hear not sure how it will last for shoes, TG made a pair as a whole cut and i have seen a few pairs of clev's float around too

who cares, mmkm is a big timer. he owns shoes for aesthetical reasons not for durability. when a kraut can have them, a murican can hundred times. no worries.

mmkn,

I like the ones poorsod posted better but I think the ones you posted are more your style. Given the shoes and outfits you have posted, I would think black would be the way to go, the black/brown sounds like an antiqued shoe, which I don't think is your style (I'm over the whole antiquing craze). The suede could be very nice but i would think it would need to be a very dark grey suede, not a lighter one.

ed, don't you think, that they have a weird shape or will this be compensated by his custom last?

I don't like the shape or the proportions of the shoe, but I think mmkn likes them a lot more than what poorsod posted, particularly the buckle. We'll wait and see.

^ Thanks all for the banter.

For me the "something different than black calf" departure with monk strap shoes occurs with the wearing of them odd jackets and trousers versus suits.

I can see black calf blücher and oxford style shoes, even military boots, with suits. Black calf monk straps in my mind goes with with what priest and friars might wear.

I'm hoping not to try too hard and come off peacocky [not how I roll], but we'll see. More and more I am settling on a charcoal/dark gray suede.

The lining of the above Chelsea/military boots is a dark grey shade. Paris was kind enough to send me a few swatches before settling.

Poorsod,

While I like the last on this one, the styling and straps to me come off as "Adirondack Mountain-esque."

Just my opinion.

The derby style buckle is somewhat more casual. However, your "Adirondack Mountainmen" must be sophisticated indeed.

I would be interested to see how the gray suede turns out. It is not something I find intuitively easy to wear.

BTW what is the turn around for JLP now that they have your last?

Although I am never in a hurry, about six months, "depending on summer."

The Parisians are away all summer.

Placed the order in March, try-on boots were delivered in May, final boots late September.

This is the view/version of the Mogador that really appeals to me . . .

In this colour and texture [not the red lining however] . . .
