Thanks to this thread and what I have seen on the interweb, I took the plunge . . .

Poor quality iPhone picture, but you can see just a few marks on the trial shoes - a very experienced and sensitive fitter is the JLP bespoke maker in NYC.

Part of the experience was "how do they feel?" Other than the "wow what a difference, like walking in butter" impression after slipping out of my Sutor's and into the trial shoes, Tutee's compilation really helped me systematically assess fit.

I was fortunate to have my bespoke clothes maker along to have his eyes on the shoes.

When you love this hobby, it is just thrilling to see a thing of beauty being made.

Has anyone ever seen a nice, naturally antiqued pair of black shoes? I ask because I have only seen truly nice antiquing on brown shoes, whereas the only nice antiquing I have seen on a black pair is a pair that is antiqued by hand, not "naturally" antiqued over time as a result of wear and good polishing.

Fosters has some pretty sweet finishes on black shoes - more of a faded look than the darkening that you'd usually associate with antiquing. Some of those are aged from sitting in the light, and some are finished by hand with some technique they use.

Trying too hard, IMHO. Just wear the shoes and take care of them. You can't hurry love.

Even then, Lattanzi's outcome ain't all that pretty.

I think the WS Foster finish is pretty cool, especially when it's applied with a light hand. Here's a pic from Will's blog.

I see what you mean.

Here's a good example of what I meant . . . This is a naturally aged Coach Carrier Bag of mine from 1987 [needs conditioning] . . .

I don't like antiquing in general, but I really don't get the appeal of antiquing a shoe that's "black." It wouldn't be black anymore. If I want or need a black shoe, it's got to actually be black.

Foo, I thought you liked Lobb's black museum calf? Or do I have that confused?
