Fosters charges an extra 380 pounds premium for this

Dean Girling of G&G and Clifford Roberts both refused to do it for me.

Dean mentioned tests at replicating it (& trying milder fading methods) weakened the leather's strength & durability (causing cracks and tears)

Do I? Maybe I do. I don't really remember what it looks like.

It can be done using alcohol, acetone and bleach, any of which can weaken the integrity of the leather. But if you follow the stripping agent with conditioner, lots of it in multiple applications, there should be no long-term effects. I tried it on a pair of black calf Aldens of no great sentimental value and they came out quite beautifully. I polished them brown, which naturally has a lot of dark-to-black shadings in places.

The better way is just to wear them, avoid black polish and let them be exposed to sunshine as you walk about in the world. Genuine patina.

^ Since I didn't get any advice from my fellow SFers, I went with what I wear most next - Chelsea, a.k.a. Military, Boots.

Have to give Kudos to the folks at JLP, they made me a trial boot even though I already have a last on file with them.

Good with denim; J'adore Dior.

Oh, the picture styling is for Ed, since he's collecting pictures of my Yeggies . . . .

^ Thanks, Ed.

With JLP the material and make are without comparison.

They are open to idiosyncratic designs as well, although the end products [what I have seen] of their bespoke program have a timeless quality about them.

the more I see these, the more I appreciate them. I really like the balance of it overall, the width of the vamp in relation to the waist and the size and cut of the heel. Many of the fancier shoes here I find don't have this down, they have very elongated vamps, super thin waists and those bias cut heels. It's like every part of the shoe is over engineered. This looks like a normal chelsea boot at first blush, and then as you look closer you start appreciating the small details that went into it. It's not in your face, and I like that.

I need more perspectives.

Thinking about this one, the Mogador, for my next . . .

but can't decide whether to do it in black or black-brown calf, or dark grey suede.

Your thoughts? Calf too plain? Suede with more character?

Also consider

Calf might be more tolerant of stains than suede if you intend to wear them on rounds. Also consider buffalo or kudu for more surface interest.
