As great as the movie was... it doesn't even come close to doing the book justice. Highly recommended.

"The Diamond Age, or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer", Neal Stephenson. I read it when it first came out, it's interesting to see how much of what he "predicted" has come to pass.

Going through The Walled Garden, by Charlie Merrill.

He used his Merrill, Lynch inheritance to found a high school in Boston, and writes with great candor and wisdom about what running an "alternative school" was like in the 60s and 70s. Great and interesting man. And-- thanks be-- his school is a lot less weird than it was in those days.

True. His whole career post Snow Crash has been one long slide into irrelevance.

Which books of his exactly are worth reading?

A while back I picked up Cryptonomicon on a recomendation and couldn't finish it. Some of the encryption stuff was interesting but I thought his characters and plot were very weak. Immature would almost be the word to describe it. The situations felt like something a nerdy 17 year old boy would contrive if he were plotting a novel... Turned me off.

The book seemed like a poor-man's V.
