What do you think of this choice of pocket square, tie and shirt? Why?

I really like everything in this outfit individually but the color of the pocket square is throwing things off for me. The color just isn't right. I see it clashing with the brights in the tie. The two have very different color values. I would keep it as an ideal spring and summer square and wear a white linen PS with the rest of this exact outfit. [/IMG][/quote]

Ah, I actually left a comment, some weeks ago, on the portuguese blog from which that picture was taken...
Really dislike the tie colour, especially in a rainy day. The knot looks poor too, and the tie is maybe a little too large, can´t really tell.
Personally, I find the collar spread exagerated, and there's no visible cuff (probably it only needs a little pull out)
With the ps I have no problems, as white really was the best choise for that tie and shirt. Glad the young gentleman didn't opt for a TV fold, breaking the formality a little (he's a clothes seller, by the way...)

^^^ This was a look that was very popular and considered very fashionable in the 80's (having the pocket square match a color in the tie and the shirt with the white collar and blue body.) It doesn't look bad but it looks dated to me.

Tie doesn't work for me at all, but the PS looks fine.

I love a strong black and white pattern and especially in this jacket. Home decor and fashion designers for years have found that a bold B&W room or outfit looks it's best when you only introduce one additional color( or maybe two at the very most). In this case you have medium blue, brown, tan, aqua. That's too many and the medium blue and aqua don't compliment each other.

Consider this with a solid blue shirt and solid black tie or black tie with a simple white or silver diamond pattern and a white pocket square. A white shirt could be nice too. I think you will find that this direction creates a simple elegant look. For something a bit more dramatic and fun, try a black tie, white shirt, purple pocket square (maybe with some white pattern in it?).

Ralph Lauren's design teams do a B&W story every few years in home and in fashion. Look these up. You will see them adding only one color for interest and accent and the results are very effective. The accent color they use is usually red or purple.

Thanks G - I get what you are saying, and sure I think that can work. However, I dont really do the white shirt or black tie thing, and if I went with something that was a more similar tone in the PS to the tie, I would have really felt matchy matchy. As it stood, I felt too matchy that day as it was.

Shirt and tie combo is fine, if a little predictable these days - lotsa people doin' blue shirts with strong red ties. Too safe imo.

I've actually tried to rock the white contrast collar and white PS many a time, but quickly abandoned it. They seem to echo each other too much, so much so that an imbalance is created. A muted dark green or navy PS might have been a better choice, complementing the gray of the jacket and blue of the shirt, but not really matching anything in particular.

Personally, I would have kept the shirt and suit, swapped the red tie for a chocolate brown grenadine, and used a navy square with some elements of red or orange.
