This is a great discussion. I looks forward to seeing it continue in the other thread.

PS: congrats to Uncontrol for handling criticism so gracefully.

too much color for my tastes. I think it might look better with khaki colored pants.

Do you have more accurate picture of the colour and fabric of the jacket; it looks absolutely great.

I think Fuuma is a little bit too dismissive in his denigration of prep style. The idea of an aspirational style with "old money" connotations is not nearly as problematic. precisely due to the democratic nature of clothing--it's not just old money date-****** fratty douchebags who wear Polo/Tommy hilfinger, etc, it's anyone with aspirations to a higher socioeconomic standing. For better or for worse, the highest levels of socioeconomic success in american culture are old-money WASPs, and as such, any aspirational style is going to reference them. Of course, my reasoning is heavily influenced by an article about polo and hip hop, but it should be noted that Ralph Lauren was a cultural outsider with apsirational motivations.

Of course, the criticism of formalistic limitation can also apply to a lot of Goth-Ninja brands that ignore color completely. In fact, it is precisely color that makes prep style so engaging--people can adopt a color palette based on their specific spin on the prep style (See Andre 3000 vs. GQ Yuppie prep qua officewear vs. TOMMY/BoO brightly colored hipster prep vs. old school Pastel/WASPY prep)

I think this whole discussion deserves its own thread IMO

WTF would I have you on ignore? I think you're a fine poster...

Yeah I know about the LO-Life/RL connection, this is more of a 90s thing though, no? (not that it matters)

On the preppy tip don't focus too much on it, I'd say my dislike is aimed at a somewhat restricted subset of it compared to what I've seen some of you guys label as prep. I sometimes wear a somewhat "BCBG" (bon chic, bon genre) style which I guess could be a french prep but without the fratboy/yachting/pastel connotations, more like nice sweater+dress shirt+jeans+boots+clean jacket. Boras the APC guy is very often dressed in a mix of workwear and BCBG style (APC=very BCBG). I don't like everything about this but if its a little bit more thoughtful and Mitteleuropean (say Branquinho, Dries etc) I'm in.

^what's the connection between prep and dandy? When you opened the topic, I immediately thought of some fits you've posted that struck me as dandy. I feel like preppy aspires to dandy but gets dilluted by American casualness towards dress (and everything non sporting) maybe.

I don't see a connection to be honest, aside from an integration of certain dressy pieces in both styles. Might we be focussing too much on that preppy thing? I mean I obviously have a strong dislike for it but I'm not sure most people should care compared to say a central thing (on sf mind you) like "style not fashion".

Great fit. Probably the only time I've really enjoyed seeing EG.
