I say drink it sooner rather than later when you get the right opportunity. "Aging" wines is greatly over-exaggerated unless we're talking about a few specific vintages and under idyllic conditions.

I agree totally with that. It's why I stopped buying vintage port to age. I figure that at 40 I was pushing my luck.

As Pinot is my favorite varietal, I'm just getting my cellar to the point where I don't have to crack a bottle under five years of age, preferably with a little more if the vintage/bottling calls for it.

I've also found that Rioja's need to age 15+ years before they are bearable.

I opened up a 2004 Rioja Reserva to have with some braised lamb shanks I had for lunch today. Tannins were pretty formidable.

Sooner rather than later, perhaps, but you still want to drink it at its optimal time in order to have it be the best it can be. I can assure you that an Araujo that is only five years old is not in its drinking prime. But Pio knows that and he knew it before he opened it; he wanted to taste it young. But I'd say that you're either underestimating the proper age for drinking well-made wine, or you're overestimating what people mean when they say to leave a wine in the cellar. Nobody would tell Piob to let that bottle sit for 20 more years, but another 5-7 would put it closer to its prime. Although I did recently have a Napa Livingston from 1991 that was stellar.

Agreed. Some, more than others, of course. For instance, I'm building a Peay library and plan to start drinking the 04s in 12. I know it's not quite Burgundy status, but I think eight years respectable.

I'd toss in Zin too.

we were just waiting to have the ring adjusted (one of the diamons is from her great grandmother). It looks great now, very happy with the outcome.
