Gone are the days when all my wine friends were buying three cases of sociando mallet for $16 vintage to vintage. My rule of thumb for inexpensive bordeaux is to buy in great years as a rising tide lifts all boats. Of recent vintages, look for 2003, 2005 and 2009 futures. - lanessan is often described as an insider's wine, dependably good and will age for 5-10 years, In any sort of decent year it's a case purchase on futures for us - puygeraud is the next lannessan, not as widely known, but a great buy, also a case purchase - senejac is correctly made, good food wine - cap de faugeres is slick, new style bordeaux but it's hard to argue with the quality, still around $20 on futures. - the 2005 reignac can still be found for $18 these wines should be widely available or can be ordered on the web.

100% Cab. Outstanding value, single vineyard (The Menzies Vineyard) Cabernet. In fact, the best Oz Cab I've tried. Most, I have not enjoyed that much, limited exposure notwithstanding. This Yalumba had lots of great fruit with a little zing from the heat. But, definitely not a fastball. More CA-like. Some lovely layers and a great finish. Will buy again. $25

^ That's a nice QPR Zin.

Oy, last night. Started off with a flight of three Bordeaux that the Somm had out for his Friday tasting. I liked their "supermarket" level one and the third was north of $100, left bank, very good.

Okay, then we got into more tastings. Our Somm friend was really in an extravagant mood last night. An Oregon S. Blanc and then an interesting Semillion/S Blanc blend (creamy with hints of banana. I kid you not) several Oregon Pinots, a Grenache, and ended the night with some cask treated Sazerac rye.

Thoughts? I've enjoyed all the one's I've had. Every one I've opened though the cork has fallen apart.
