The rational assessment is that being a teenager sucked and the above leaves out the everyday hassles of parents, teachers, bosses, cliques, heartbreak, et al. - but there is a certain seductiveness about the kinds of freedom afforded to even a working-class American teenager.

I was a junior for much of the year:
Drove a beater F-150 with a 5.0, no heat and no air - my method of leaving the school parking lot was to just drive over the medians and sidewalks when lines backed up.

I took my SATs as a sophomore and could get into almost any state school I wanted, so
I quit even pretending to give a **** about school. Had a single-digit grade in honors Trig that the school made disappear so it didn't **** up their numbers. Schedule consisted of AP liberal arts electives, lit mag, newspaper, Academic Decathlon.

Weekend teen punk shows without proper soundmen - somehow lucked into holding on to my hearing.
Relatively little drug and alcohol use at that point, all told. I was listening to a lot of hardcore and the Straight Edge **** rubbed off on the edges.

Bad teenage sex semi-regularly.

Hurt my knee attempting to skateboard

Tempted to say that if I knew then what I know now (the world doesn't reward you for unfocused, raw intelligence) I would have studied hard and gotten a full ride somewhere and followed my plan of political science to law school. But really, be an anarchist **** up helped me discover some things. I'm happy with who I am - more money would be nice, but I don't care about douchebag fripperies.

Honest to god, I love the age I am now, wouldn't want to be anything else. I'm still at a age where stupidity is entertaining. Thankfully I have about a year left.

I was acing high school, pretending to be a Randian objectivisit, playing guitar in an experimental noise band, reading rudimentary books on occultism, smoking dope and beginning to fall in love with Beethoven, Wagner and Bach.

Four hours a day in the practice room. Music classes, English classes, ensembles. Starcraft. I miss those days and the two-dollar shampoo.
