Agreed, I purchased the 3Gs the day it came out because the hardware update was significant over the 2G, but given that the software update is free to anyone with a 3Gs I would basically be upgrading the camera. The screen is already high res enough that I can't make out pixels, and it has the same core speeds.

This is Apple milking the cash cow rather than pioneering technology.

New screen (trust me, you can see the pixels on the 3GS), new slimmer case, longer lasting battery, wraparound external antenna, etc... all of these are new pioneering features.

I hope this new date change for shipment does not effect those that pre-ordered the first day cause I would be pissed.

I pre-ordered today, without incident. It doesn't look like I'll get my phone til early July, but that's fine. Just so long as I never have to step foot in an AT&T store or worse, the iTomaton store.

I agree that the changes are pretty incremental, but the nicer camera and HD video will be nice to have, and I'm upgrading the memory on mine too, which is nice for my long-haul flights and video usage. Also, as I've mentioned before, the non-S 3G phone is running a bit slow on the latest updates. New processor is the biggest reason I'm making the switch.

And I can't believe what people are supposedly willing to pay for old iPhones. Is that for real?

I guess it is. Kind of perplexing. I'm going to sell my 3G when I get back from Europe in mid-August and hopefully snag a white iPhone with no problems. I'd be thrilled if I got $100 for my 3G.

However before making the trip to AT&T I will swing by Verizon and see how the Droid X feels in my hand. Probably will be too big for my liking though. Who knows. Plus I very much welcome the thinness of the iPhone 4.

For people who care about things like this, the iPhone 4's confirmed to have 512MB of RAM, double the iPad's, 3GS's, and 4x the 3G's and original's.
Apple confirmed this 512MB figure during one of the WWDC sessions last week, and we have subsequently verified this. The session it was revealed in is now available (Session 147, Advanced Performance Optimization on iPhone OS, pt 2) for registered Apple developers.

anyone NOT eligible for the full upgrade yet planning on buying one anyways? these prices for used 3gs phones is crazy. eBay is fetching $250-$300 on used 16gb 3GS and more for the 32gb.

i'm not eligible for the full upgrade yet, but thinking about buying regardless just because of the prices for used phones.

iOS4 is mighty nice. No noticeable slowdown in usability like the previous OS in older hardware

I'm not even a year into my contract, but for some reason I was able to upgrade for $200. I assumed I was able to preorder because of the clusterfuck on the 15th and was expecting my order to be canceled, but it went through without a hitch and I should be receiving it on Thursday...

[edit: just realized this was #666 for me...

Can you use your iPhone like an iPod? Sync it with iTunes, plug it into a Bose Sound Dock?
