So what? I find it strange when someone repeatedly recommends a particular Blu-Ray player for systems with no video component. Kind of like repeatedly recommending Alden shoes to someone without feet.

You don't know what you are talking about. Oppo has both audio and video customers. The Absolute Sound, Headfi, Stereophile, and many others have praised the Oppo 83 and 83SE for its terrific sound quality.

Looking for a quality CD player. Right now I'm using an old DVD player for want of something else!

The Oppo is a very nice player, but you do need a TV to set it up. I know people were complaining about this kind of issue for DVD-A players in an audio-only setup.

Since Saturday Morning Audio carries NAD you may want to check if they have any used NAD stereo receivers like a C720BEE or C725BEE. I haven't personally owned one but they are supposed to be well regarded. Have you considered a couple year old multi-channel receiver? From the speakers Saturday Morning carries I would also listen to Monitor Audio Bronze bookshelves. A lot of Internet direct speaker manufacturers have in-home trial programs if you are willing to go that route.

Good advice here.

Also, for a really inexpensive alternative you can go with iPod + powered speakers like AudioEngine. Surprisingly good sound.

Love Lyra carts!

Listening to an entry level analogue setup right now for review that will knock your socks off, mate.
