Prestige can often be irrational, but I think that Harvard's prestige is based in its enormous endowment, the quality of the students and faculty. I'm sure the faculty go there because of the endowment and for the type of students they get to teach; the students go there because of the education and the opportunities they will have after graduating. Why these opportunities? Because of the quality of the education, which gives it prestige, and the number of powerful individuals who went there. Also, and this is huge in my opinion, since a university is a center of learning: Harvard has by far the largest library of all universities - larger than the second and third highest universities combined.

How were there so many replies to this thread? It's like someone dropped a bucket of troll-chum in the water and the sharks just went crazy.

That said, at least we're not ignoring the advice of the Beach Boys (that is, if any of you went to any of these schools):

Person: So where do you go to college?
Me: Oh, have you heard of Princeton?
Person: Well of course
Me: Yeah my college is just a few miles up the road from there, it's called Rutgers.

My generic response to people who ask about college career. And I'd say Harvard is definetely the most prestigious.

The school with the lowest acceptance rate in the USA is the Curtis Institue of Music in Philadelphia (I attended); 4%, twice as difficult to get into as Harvard and Yale.
