correct the leather is wayyyyy nicer ... just wearing them and the look, i couldnt justify the high price tag

I got you. Thanks for the info guys. I'm pretty sure I'm still going to get the Roys. I'm actually looking for a simple plain toe boot and I've never seen Red Wings that look like this after some wear...

That's the beauty of the chromexcel. Actually, that particular pair of boots has been both admired and criticized. Criticized (with good reason imo) for being basically mistreated. They were purportedly worn for 30 days straight and beat to hell and back with no rest. Supposedly, they were only 30 days old at the time the pics were taken, which is a little extreme.

I'm betting the boots would look better if worn hard, but smart, over a longer period of time--and put into rotation with other shoes. Instead of looking like they'd been run over by a semi, they'll look (and feel) comfy and sweet.

As far as the plain styling, yup. They're simple. They're plain. I think it displays the interest of this particular leather--the shades of reds and browns and blacks that develop--to good advantage.

Please keep in mind, the choices are very limited. Alden is pretty conservative when it comes to makeups. Plus, stuff like cigar, whiskey, and ravello are pretty much out of the question.

+1000 - I recently requested a one-off for myself, and Tom immediately proposed making it part of his next pre-order. This has the advantage for me of getting the boot much faster (one-offs can apparently take as long as 2 years to be fulfilled, while pre-orders take 3 - 6 months), and the advantage to the rest of you of giving you access to a cool new Alden design. I like to think of it as the LS X Atlas boot - snuff suede, wingtip, barrie last, regular welt, double leather soles. Keep an eye on Tom's blog for the pre-order info!

So, if you have any ideas for shoes or boots, send them over to Tom and maybe he'll make them up.

yeah, the new leather is less capable of absorbing the polish/cream still. i used Obenauf LP on mine, blowdry and then wiped off [beading] excess. wore them a few days , then repeat the process ... only this time, after wiping off the excess, i applied a thin layer of Kiwi neutral cream and buffed when dry :: black polish/cream will fcuk up the [white] contrast stitching.

anyone have experience with the van last, specifically on a shell LHS?
have read its recommended to size down 1/4 - 1/2
anyone with firsthand experience on how it fits relative to others would be greatly appreciated
