What is the purpose of boots in the city?

Hi everyone,

I have always wondered what the functional purpose of wearing boots in the city is, especially when there isn't a foot of snow on the ground. While I love the look of boots, the top half is always covered by your pants, thus preventing even your pants from getting wet. My only guess would be ankle support, but what city-slicker actually requires it?

In short, unless I'm enlightened, I'm tempted to conclude they're largely only worn in the city for aesthetics.

Hope to hear someone defend my growing boot collection!

Florian

I have yet to ever blow my nose on my pocket squares, but now that I know my clothing has a functional requirement I suppose I should start.

Hell, pretty much everything coveted around here is prized for aesthetic reasons. If we were all into functionality, we'd be buying technical outerwear and sport sandals.

Prior to pavement, cities were incredibly messy. So people wore boots in them.

Unless you are seated all the time, they are exceptionally useful for hiding hideous socks from sight.

You shouldn't have to defend anything. "I like boots" is reason enough.

What is the purpose of a city when the country is a perfectly friendly and appropriate place for brown shoes?

Just because there is not snow does not mean that there is not slop, ice or way too much salt. The last, too much salt, is typically why I will wear a boot to work and then change into my office shoes.

Am tempted to try dress boots for the upcoming slop season, but am not ready to go bespoke.

Oh my, any intellectual worth his salt knows that when the functional aspect of any material object has been eliminated, what remains is style.
