Indeed. I just wish they weren't so judgmental about the cars that I happen to like.

Then again, I know exactly what I think when I see somebody in a raised pickup truck with a confederate flag in the back. And so on and so forth.

As I have said before, it was my one day midlife crisis. Ten months, or so, left and I trade it in for a pair of legs capped off with a pair of shoes.

It is faster and offers better handling on a track and, but if given the opportunity, would you choose the Cayman over the 911?

I likely wouldn't

I probably would. I think I'd be a lot more likely to enjoy driving a modern mid-engine sports car design than the rear-engine design of the 911. The Porsche engineers have done some amazing things with the 911 but at the end of the day, you cannot get around the laws of rotational inertia and the fact that with all that engine weight hanging off the rear axle of the 911, any driving screw-ups mean you are going to have to fight its tendency to spin rear-end first into the nearest immovable object.

That said, I'd be thrilled with either and the above question isn't one I'll need to make any time soon.

Like I said, I don't really pass judgment on people or treat them differently for owning a Porsche - it's not any business of mine. My main point was that spending a ton of money on something which ultimately is [impractical] conveyance strikes me as somehow wasteful when there is so much poverty, etc. in the world, yada yada. I told you it was some subconscious commie crap. All that said, it's not like I'm giving 70% of my income to charities either. Now, if it is demonstrated to me that a person owns a beautiful, expensive and extremely high performing automobile and also cannot operate it properly, I will sneer openly. Like the guy with the $40k Harley who was too cool and trying to ignore me up until I shouted at him, while trying to tell him his kickstand was down and he was about to drive off and plant it in a turn and crash.

Fair enough, but I'm sure plenty of people would say the same about whatever hobby you spend your money on is. Like a website devoted entirely to men's clothing (I realize this is not strictly a hobby, also, it is awesome).

I agree with this principle.

The difference in my mind being that it's much easier and more understandable to scoff at a hobby that involves the purchase of a $100K+ car, vs. one that costs a reasonable amount of money for your average person to ever dream of having control over. Also, I think a lot of owners of expensive things see jealousy where what is there is actually a person feeling sorry for them for feeling they need such uselessly extravagant things. Whatever, I don't want to think about it anymore.
